How to make a Cinemagraph with Photoshop and After Effects

In this tutorial we take a look at how to make a Cinemagraph with Adobe Photoshop and After Effects. Cinemagraphs, a term coined by Jamie Beck & Kevin Burg, are not quite photographs, and not quite video. They straddle a line somewhere in between. For more information, check out this article, and see the site where they originated. Some very cool stuff!

If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to ask!

Thanks!

[...] When Kert Gartner posted a Cinemagraph I was intrigued, however when he stated that it took a lot longer than he imagined, I then hoped that he would do a tutorial of the process because I also thought that it would be a simple thing! And he did! If you are unfamiliar, the term Cinemagraph is a new one describing a cross between a still image and a few frames of a video using the old school animated GIF format. Check out some Cinemagraphs here. [...]

Thank you for tutorial! Does anybody posts their cinemagraphs on tumblr? I have problems with “Error Uploading Photo” almost every time. And I have my gifs under 400kb and under 49 frames…even under 64 colors…some of them works but some don’t. Anybody knows the definite restrictions for gifs on tumblr?

I appreciate you showing how to do the technique but I think a different image would have been more effective. The stationary buildings make the final result look pretty much like a regular video of window washers.

  8. Kert Gartner (VFX Haiku Admin) Says:

That’s a good point, Mike. But the technique would still be the same on a different photo :)

Great tutorial. I just dont get it why did he combine photograph with the video. It would be much easier to shoot video only (with Canon 5D for example) and export still image from it, or not?

  27. Kert Gartner (VFX Haiku Admin) Says:

Yup, that’s works too, and that’s how I did my 2nd one.

The only reason I used the still in this video is because I liked the still better than the framing that I had taken with the video.

  35. Lisa Says:

Thanks for the tutorial, I’m currently using this method to create my first cinemagraph and MAN is it way more complicated than I thought. Finding a good loop point on a bunch of blowing leaves is terrible!! Also, I found that you skimmed over what you did to cut the footage down to the length of just the loop; I’ve set out a working area with my (shoddy) loop, but when it’s exported the video is 22 seconds long, showing a black screen for the last.. 20 seconds.

  36. Kert Gartner (VFX Haiku Admin) Says:

Make sure the in/out points are set correctly in your after effects comp. That’s probably the issue here.
